Getting Around on Okinawa Island ThingsAsian: TravelTip Icon -- Sightseeing

Description:

Unlike most parts of Japan, well, the major cities and tourist destinations that is, getting around Okinawa is not easy without renting a car.

The Yui Rail monorail is a wonderful thing, going from Naha Airport to Shuri Castle, and making getting around most major areas of Naha a breeze.

But if you want to go somewhere else, like the castle ruins of Nakagusuku and the nearby Nakamura House, a sort of historical house museum of traditional culture and life, you will likely find that neither public buses nor tour buses go there. Everyone has their interests, and if yours match up with those of the typical Japanese tourist, you're in luck. But if you're more interested in traditional culture and pre-modern historical sites than Nago Pineapple Park or the like, I have been told that renting a car is the best way to go.

As for me, I'm hoping to see how I fare on a bike. It'll be an adventure.
