Emei Mountain ThingsAsian: TravelTip Icon -- Sightseeing

Address:

(100 KM south of Chendu)
Emei, Sichuan China

Price:

ModerateModerate

Description:

Emei Mountain is among the holiest of places for Chinese Buddhists, and as such, difficult to summarize in a breif paragraph.

Pilgrims come to visit the hundered or so shrines, temples and other holy spots along the mountain. Trekkers visit to do the 3100 meter hike and enjoy, weather permitting, some of the loveliest views in Sichuan.

Admission, like the stairs that bring you to the top, is steep; 120 for a pass, and an additional 10 -20 to get into the various holy sites. Quite a racket, actually. As for accommodations, most travelers will sleep in one of the many monasteries along the way. Be forewarned - the climb is arduous, and the weather can be chilly. Pack accordingly.
