Description:

Just a quick pop of the head inside this place tells you that The Balcony is not your typical Yangshuo hippie-trail restaurant. The music -- usually a light trip-hop / acid jazz / reggae blend -- lulls the visitor into a pleasant hypnotic state. The menu is decidedly different than the Yangshuo norm, with a bit more European panache right down to the French-press coffee. Architecturally, the place has a very well thought out feel to it. The Balcony's owner, Xioa Ma, is a set decorator in his native France, and it shows. A beautiful second floor loft space is connected to the first via a stylish spiral staircase, and a redwood balcony (from where the place gets its name) hangs right over the river. A mélange between European and Chinese sensibilities, The Balcony is the only place in town to get Quiche, and in a town loaded with leathery pancakes, serves amazingly good crepes.
