Beijing China

Description:

Located just south of Tiananmen Square. Qianmen Market Street is the oldest market street in Beijing; people have been buying and selling goods here since around the time Columbus sailed the ocean blue. Many of the shops here are hundreds of years old, retaining their traditional appearance. Quianmen market street is considered the most traditional of Beijing's shopping areas, so naturally it's a good place to shop for silk items, paintings, traditional Chinese medicines, and other items you aren't likely to find at your local 7-11. Be forewarned: The area is busy, even on weekdays. Go there on a weekend or on a holiday, and you will quickly discover just where the Chinese metaphor for crowded "ren shan, ren hai" (people mountain, people sea) comes from.

Qianmen Market Stree has been totally renovated in the past two years. They have tried to give it the appearance of the 1920's. Many of the old stores and restaurants are still here though. Yes, still crowded.
