Sur’s the stuff that legends are made of. Some say it’s the birthplace of Sindbad of the 1001 Nights Arabian fairytale. While there’s another school that says Sindbad’s from Sohar, which is further north, no one dispute’s Sur’s place in history.

It is a place where they still make the dhows – wooden boats that have been used for centuries – by hand. From the downtown beach area, the dhow yard is down the beach as it arches to the right.

In Sur you feel as if you are on the edge of the world, in another world. A seaside town about 350kms from Oman’s capital Muscat, Sur boasts of a long seafaring tradition.

The Sur lighthouse is still active and is an approximately 11m (36 ft) three-storey tower with domed roof. Sur is a small port on the Gulf of Oman about 30 km west of Ras al-Hadd, the easternmost tip of Arabia. The lighthouse is located on Ras Ayqah, the promontory on the east side of the harbour entrance.
