It has been a good drive south from Al Ashkarah, the road hugged the sea on our left and the desert sprawled to our right with occasional Bedu villages. The stretch of sabkha (salt flats) on the way had only added to the mystique. Intrigued by the vast stretch of white crust we had taken our cars off road, only to find that it may not be a good idea to drive on that. The land was fragile and cracked under our feet. We had scrambled back to our cars, moved on to the safety of solid ground and driven on.
