The Heart of Vietnam

Culture and language are both walls that divide people. These walls are not really high if you take the time to reach over them.

A short time ago a vietnamese woman saw my stories on thingsasian and sent me a story that she said best describes the vietnamese people. She was right but more that that, the story describes my relationship with the people of Vietnam. This is the story;

The Most Beautiful Heart
By Unknown Author

One day a young man was standing in the middle of the town proclaiming that he had the most beautiful heart in the whole valley.

A large crowd gathered and they all admired his heart for it was perfect. There was not a mark or a flaw in it. Yes, they all agreed, it truly was the most beautiful heart they had ever seen. The young man was very proud and boasted more loudly about his beautiful heart.

Suddenly, an old man appeared at the front of the crowd and said "Why your heart is not nearly as beautiful as mine".

The crowd and the young man looked at the old man's heart. It was beating strongly, but full of scars, it had places where pieces had been removed and other pieces put in, but they didn't fit quite right and there were several jagged edges. In fact, in some places there were deep gouges where whole pieces were missing. The people stared -- how can he say his heart is more beautiful, they thought?

The young man looked at the old man's heart and saw it's state and laughed. "You must be joking," he said. "Compare your heart with mine, mine is perfect and your is a mess of scars and tears.

"Yes" said the old man, "Yours is perfect looking but I would never trade with you. You see, every scar represents a person to whom I have given my love -- tear out a piece of my heart and give it to them, and often they give me a piece of their heart which fits into an empty place in my heart, but because the pieces aren't exact, I have some rough edges, which I cherish, because they remind me of the love we shared.

Sometimes I have given pieces of my heart away and the other person hasn't returned a piece of heart to me. These are the empty gouges -- giving love is taking a chance. Although these gouges are painful, they stay open, reminding me of the love I have for these people too, and I hope someday that they may return and fill the space I have waiting. So now do you see what true beauty is?

The young man stood silently with tears running down his cheeks. He walked up to the old man, reached into his perfect young and beautiful heart and ripped a piece out. He offered it to the old man with trembling hands. The old man took his offering, placed it in his heart and then took a piece from his old scarred heart and placed it in the wound of the young man's heart. It fit, but not perfectly, as there were some jagged edges.

The young man looked at his heart, not perfect anymore but more beautiful than ever, since love from the old man's heart flowed into his. They embraced and walked away side by side.

Dear Jim,

I am happy to read "The Most Beautiful Heart" again. You have wonderful heart sharing with others your nice stories about our country. Wishing you good health to come to Vietnam more often.

I just completed a special tour for Peter and Sharon. They came to VN the second time and this time was to see their sponsored child Thu, a young poor child whose father died two years ago. Thu lives with her mother. Peter and Sharon stayed in cheap hotels, traveled with cheap motobikes and be with a cheap tour guide (me) to save the best things for their sponsored child. Their visit included Marble Mountain in Danang. Can you imagine, just after receiving "lucky drops" from "Mother Nature's Breast" in Huyen Khong Cave, Sharon received a phone call. She was offered a new interesting job with very high salary!

Is the lucky drops or her golden heart to love and help a child bringging her good luck???

This morning I took a bus to Hue to guide a new group. On the bus I met a child named Bui The Dinh, 10yrs. He suffered heart sickness, which became more serious after his father died from Cancer 6 months ago. He is living with his mother, his younger sister and his grand mother in Binh Phu, a very poor commune of Thang Binh, Quang Nam province. Dinh and his mother are coming to Hue for a check up after the child's heart operation one month ago. The operation fee was supported by East Meets West Foundation and by a Vietnamese lady whose name is hidden. East Meets West have done great activities to help poor people and children in Vietnam. They have huge support from a rich man who doesn't want to appear in public for his great work.

I would like to add more to "The Most Beautiful Heart", an unknown-author story I told you some time ago. Hoping we will have more and more beautiful hearts to make this world happy and peaceful.
