A visit to the historical city of Malacca in West Malaysia is a must for anyone traveling in this region. Ruled centuries ago by the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British - they each have left their unique mark in this quaint city.

However it is the Chinese immigrants, who have been here for over 100 years, that have stamped their imprint most clearly in the daily life and architecture of this city. These pioneers of old can still be seen carrying on their day to day business as though time has stood still. Temples, churches, old shophouses, historical landmarks and of course, Nonya food abound everywhere. Malacca is a living museum that is waiting to be explored.

This short photo essay of the "Grandfathers of Malacca", is a tribute to these remarkable gentlemen. For they shaped and built Malacca, and give her its timeless character.

Enjoy!
