John Irvin
Biographical Info:
After my graduation at the age of 44 from UCLA, I took an exploratory trip to Thailand, Vietnam, and Japan. These places all fascinated me in one way or another, but I found that the southeast Asian way of life, the climate, and the low cost of living attracted me the most. I returned to the U.S., sold all of my stuff, and came back to Thailand. I got a job at Chiang Mai University, and that's how Chiang Mai became my new home. Since coming to Thailand, I have been involved with teaching, writing, and learning everything I can about Thai culture. I have written several articles about Thai artists for local publications, and I have also created an Internet website about Thailand. I enjoy learning about Thai people, eating Thai food, and I am slowly but surely learning to speak Thai. In addition to these things, I also like drawing, playing guitar, traveling, and doing some kind of exercise everyday so that I don't turn into a big pile of mush. I also spend a good share of my time teaching, and although the monetary rewards are small, I do find the students very fascinating. I don't know how long I will be here, but for now, I am happy in Thailand.
